Youngman in the Barnet Vermont Presbyterian Records (1789 to 1823)
"... It is hard for us to realize the Barnet of 1790. The census of that year gives 94 families, the population being 572. As nearly as we can tell, there were only a few roads laid out and in some manner made passable. There was not a four-wheeled vehicle in town of any kind, and no roads fit for its use had there been such. A very few frames houses had been built, but most of the people lived in log cabins. ... People traveled on foot or on horseback, and no newspaper was published within sixty miles. ..." - History of Barnet, Vermont
Both John and Thomas Youngman lived in Barnet, Caledonia/Orange Vermont. Both were listed as living there on the first 1790 U.S. Census with their wives and children. John Youngman is listed in the Church records and his children are listed as baptized at the Presbyterian church. Thomas Youngman is listed as co-sponsoring Church pew No 17 on the main floor of the Church.
John Youngman in Barnet, VT:
- 06 Apr 1785, Voter's Registration: Took Freeman's Oath in Barnet, VT
- John Youngman and family on the 1790 U.S. Census in Barnet, VT
- John Youngman (and family ?) on the 1800 U.S. Census in Barnet, VT
- 22 Nov 1796 in Barnet, VT: House and all contents burned in a fire
- John Youngman and family on the 1810 US Census in Barnet VT
- Death in 1813 in Stanstead, Canada (no official death record)
Thomas Youngman in Barnet, VT:
- Thomas Youngman and family on the 1790 U.S. Census in Barnet VT
- Thomas Young and family living in Highgate, VT on the 1800 US Census
- There were many married couples and families in the congregation. Only John Youngman is mentioned listed as a church member. Why did Abigail Youngman joined the congregation? The children were all baptized by the Presbyterian church. Why did none of them join the congregation?
- John Youngman's only offenses were for swearing and carrying a broom on the Lord's Day. These were very, very common offenses. The church would forgive these offenses by having offenders repent and vow to not do it again.
- In the last item in 1811/1812, John Youngman requested to be officially be 'admitted into the church'. There was never a final decision made on his request which seems to confirm that he died before the elders could make a final decision.
- John Youngman was living in Barnet VT in 1811/1812. And, given his recent request to be admitted to the Church, possibly he was visiting his daughter in Canada when he died there?
- There is a Thomas and Mary (Goodwillie) Young family. Looking into this family they lived in both Montreal and Ontario Canada. This might be the 'Young family' in the 1821 Canada Census in Ontario rather than our 'Thomas Young(man)'.
